We live in an age of many ‘Englishes’! British or American English? Standard or ‘new Englishes’? And what about EFL, ESL and ELF? This webinar will take a look at the key characteristics of these labels. It will consider how they influence the content and development process of ELT materials and offer examples and tips to help writers and publishers deal with the constraints and embrace the opportunities.

Sherrise Roehr, Publisher, Americas and Global, has more than 20 years of professional experience in the English language teaching field. Through her role as head of the National Geographic Learning editorial and writing teams based in Boston, Sherrise has overseen the development of many internationally successful, best-in-class ELT titles, including the renowned Stand Out, Grammar Explorer, Great Writing, World Link, World English, Pathways, and 21st Century Communication (in partnership with TED) programs for adult and academic English learners, the new Impact and Perspectives programs for secondary learners, as well as the award-winning Our World program for primary students. Sherrise is well-known for her game-changing approach to material design, creating content that leverages National Geographic resources effectively to make learning meaningful, engaging and impactful for both teachers and learners of all ages in the classroom.

Karen Spiller has worked in the ELT industry for more than 30 years. Her first few years as a rep (OUP and Heinemann) in Spain taught her what teachers were looking for from their ELT materials and she then put this knowledge to work as a publisher (Macmillan) where she published best-selling titles for global markets. In recent years, working as an independent publishing consultant, Karen has commissioned and developed many ground-breaking British English global titles for National Geographic Learning, including Life, Outcomes, Keynote and Look. Karen is also the co-founder of two innovative companies operating in the ELT publishing industry: firstly, ELT Teacher 2 Writer which publishes books and runs training courses that help teacher and writers perfect their writing skills; secondly ELT Publishing Professionals which is a dynamic online directory of freelance professionals with powerful search tools to help publishers find skilled freelancers with the right experience for their projects.
