Carol Griffiths small Carol Griffiths - 'Good Language Teachers'

2 November 2019, 3 pm

As we all know, teaching is a very demanding profession, for which the hours spent in the classroom are only the tip of the iceberg. It requires the teacher to be autonomous, reflective, interculturally aware, knowledgeable, sensitive to individual differences, and ‘on board’ with all the latest acronyms such as ELF and EMI. In addition, they must be conversant with all the cutting-edge methodologies (including the latest technology), assessment theories and procedures, classroom management practices, and feedback techniques. They must be able to manage relationships and give instruction in strategies, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, pragmatics or skills. And they must be able to handle all this dynamic complexity without getting burnt out. This webinar will present previously unpublished research and briefly discuss each of these essential aspects of good language teachers, taking a ‘human’ perspective, recognizing that teachers are not just machines, but real human beings, with feelings, needs, identities and lives of their own. The webinar will conclude with recommendations for teachers and teacher educators suggesting some ideas about how to develop the good language teacher.

Dr Carol Griffiths has been a teacher, manager and teacher trainer of ELT for many years. She has taught in many places around the world, including New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, China, North Korea, Turkey and UK. She has also presented at numerous conferences and published widely, including her books Lessons from Good Language Learners and The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning. Individual differences, teacher education and support, English as a medium of instruction, English as a lingua franca, action research, and using literature to teach language are her major areas of research interest.
