    Annie Altamirano

"Students can learn how to use grammar in their own writing by studying how poets do —and do not — abide by traditional writing rules in their work. Poetry enables teachers to teach their students how to write, read, and understand any text but it can also be used as a means to build empathy and understanding. In this way it can be a vehicle for messages of social justice, bringing our attention towards injustices, and helping us cope with them.
Through a practical classroom-based approach, Annie will present three poems on discrimination, being an immigrant and being a refugee written by Carol Ann Duffy, Benjamin Zephaniah and Nicola Davies and will show how to enable students to engage confidently with poetry while becoming aware of social issues.

Annie Altamirano (MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics) has over 30 years’ experience as a teacher at all levels and ages. Author and co-author of courses for children and adolescents, online and digital content published by all major publishing houses, she is also a teacher trainer and consultant. Annie travels extensively delivering professional development seminars and workshops in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Since her early years as a teacher, she has integrated the use of film, art, poetry and different visual elements in her classes and materials as a way of helping students develop their linguistic skills as well as their creativity. Her latest publications include Cambridge Grammar & Writing Teacher Resource and Pearson’s Now I Know Level 4."
